The Today Show
In 1968 The Principal (then known as Bankers Life) became one of the sponsors of the NBC Today show. During 1968 and 1969, Hugh Downs, shown here with Barbara Walters, delivered the company's commercial messages every Monday morning on the show.
  Centennial billboard
To publicize the centennial year and encourage the community to join in the celebration, the company placed these billboards throughout the city of Des Moines, Iowa. Two-minute television commercials talking about various aspects of company history also appeared on local television.

711 High square addition
When Corporate One in Des Moines was designed in the late 1930s, it was designed to be able to expand to become a full square built around the auditorium. By the early 70s employees were squeezed into every nook and cranny even through a wing along the east side of the building and in the annex, which had been added in the 1960s. The north and west wings of 711 High began to fill with employees in late 1978.
  Energy crisis
During the energy crisis of the 1970s, The Principal was not immune to the rising energy costs and shortages. From August 1978 to August 1979 the Home Office decreased its energy consumption by 48 percent by imposing cooling and heating restrictions. Buildings were set at 78 degrees during the summer and 65 degrees during the winter. The winter months prompted employees to take creative steps to stay warm, such as wearing scarves, gloves and insulated booties.
