The Principal Financial Group is Once Again a Top 10 Company for Executive Women
Recognized by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE)
(Des Moines, Iowa) —Championing women's advancement in the workplace has earned the Principal Financial Group® a spot as a top 10 company on the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) 2009 “Top 50 Companies for Executive Women” list.
The annual award places specific emphasis on the number of women with jobs with profit-and-loss responsibility. It also measures women's representation among the highest-paid and top-tier positions at America's largest companies. This marks the seventh consecutive year The Principal® has been included on the list.
“We are proud of this distinct honor which acknowledges the unwavering commitment of The Principal to the professional development of women, who make up over half of our workforce,” said Mary O'Keefe, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, The Principal. “Our talented employees bring unique backgrounds and experiences which benefit the company and, most importantly, the clients who look to us for financial solutions."
To make the list of the NAFE Top 50, companies must have at least two women on the board, of which The Principal has four, and track gender in profit and loss jobs, something they have not done before.
Accepting the award on behalf of The Principal was Karen Shaff, executive vice president and general counsel, who said, “Through forward-thinking programs and educational opportunities, we're able to create an environment where all employees feel they have the tools necessary to excel in their careers while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.”
Making the List - Methodology
In addition to corporate programs and policies dedicated to advancing women, NAFE measured results, examining the number of women in each company overall, in senior management and on its board of directors. NAFE drew particular attention to the number of women with profit-and-loss responsibility. To be named to the NAFE Top Companies for Executive Women, companies with a minimum of two women on the board completed a comprehensive application that focused on the number of women in senior ranks (compared to men and to the company population), including questions about the programs and policies which support women's advancement.
The National Association for Female Executives (NAFE), founded in 1972, is the largest women's professional and business association in the country. It publishes NAFE Magazine, a quarterly publication distributed to 65,000 members. NAFE began conducting the Top 30 Companies for Executive Women in 2002, picking up the work of Working Woman magazine. NAFE is part of Working Mother Media, which also operates Working Mother magazine, the annual 100 Best WorkLife Conference, and recently launched the new initiative the Best Companies for Women of Color.
