FORTUNE Names the Principal Financial Group 17 on the "100 Best Companies to Work For" List

The Principal makes the list for the seventh consecutive year

(Des Moines, Iowa) — The Principal Financial Group® has once again been named to the FORTUNE "100 Best Companies to Work For". Coming in at 17 (up from 21 in 2008), this marks the seventh year in a row that The Principal® has earned a spot on the list.

"This award is about the dedication and commitment of our employees and management team to the company and our customers. Having our highest ranking in a challenging year like 2008 demonstrates the unique culture of The Principal," said Larry Zimpleman, president and CEO, The Principal. "We will continue to focus on being a great place for great people to do great work."

FORTUNE specifically highlighted employees' appreciation of weekly e-mails from CEO Zimpleman during the height of the financial upheaval. "Hearing from you was exactly what I personally needed," said one employee of The Principal.

This seventh year on the list is perhaps the most gratifying," said Ralph Eucher, senior vice president, Human Resources, The Principal. "Being a great place to work isn't just about adding perks and communicating good news. It's about keeping employees informed, helping them understand the bigger picture, setting realistic expectations, and all the while, keeping their best interests at heart."

The Principal is the only company on this year's FORTUNE 100 list based in Iowa. The complete list of companies appears on www.fortune.com and in the Feb. 2 issue of the magazine.

About the FORTUNE "100 Best Companies to Work For"

The "100 Best Companies to Work For" list is based on two criteria: an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company and the opinions of the company's employees. Two-thirds of the total score comes from responses to a random employee survey, measuring such things as employee attitudes toward management, job satisfaction, and camaraderie within the organization. The remaining one-third of the score is based on an evaluation of each company's demographic makeup, pay and benefits programs, and culture. Companies are scored in four areas: credibility (communication to employees), respect (opportunities and benefits), fairness (compensation, diversity), and pride/camaraderie (philanthropy, celebrations).
