Cultural Shift: Healthy Businesses Run Better

Companies adopt healthier behaviors through new wellness program from the Principal Financial Group

(Des Moines, Iowa) — Now more than ever, as businesses watch the health of their bottom line, they should also pay close attention to the health of their employees. According to the Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM, more than two out of five American workers agree wellness programs would make them work harder and perform better.

A new wellness program from The Principal® gives employers the necessary tools to create a cultural shift, making healthy living a way of life for employees.

"We're introducing a fresh approach to workplace wellness that empowers organizations to improve the health of their members, which is just what the doctor ordered," said Lee Dukes, president of Principal Wellness Company, a subsidiary of the Principal Financial Group. "It's not surprising that healthy organizations create healthier employees, but employers focused on running their businesses have limited time to focus on benefits. Our program is simple, effective and most importantly in today's environment, it's affordable."

Since every business is different, the entire program can be tailored to meet specific employer goals.

What's the Skinny?

Employers receive a straight-forward guide including a year-round education and communication campaign and incentive strategy. By participating in wellness-driven events like onsite health screenings and seminars, employees receive points. These can be redeemed for incentives like lower co-pays or deductibles as part of next year's benefits. Employees stay engaged and encouraged along the way with things like wellness challenges, which often spark friendly worksite competition.

"A change in health status won't happen overnight, but we've identified systematic ways to improve the health of an employee population over time," notes Dukes. "All components of the program are easy to implement and give employers ongoing feedback on the health of their business."
