Rebuilding Retirement Savings through Wise Choices
The Principal Financial Group recognizes National 401(k) Day
September 9, 2009 (Des Moines, IA) — As American workers focus on rebuilding their retirement savings, National 401(k) Day and the Principal Financial Group® remind them that long-term health, both physical and financial, requires making wise choices.
National 401(k) Day is Sept. 11, and this year's theme, "Make Wise Choices," draws a connection between lifestyle and investment decisions to show 401(k) plans are an essential part of overall financial well-being.
"The season for saving should never go out of style. National 401(k) Day is the perfect reminder for individuals that now is the time to focus on what they can control and find new ways to preserve and increase their retirement savings," said Dan Houston, president of retirement and investor services at The Principal®.
The Principal makes it easy for its retirement plan clients to celebrate National 401(k) Day with their employees. Available in a special toolkit are educational webcasts, Roth 401(k) tools, posters, tips for saving, an annual retirement check-up worksheet and much more. All help promote the importance of the employer-sponsored retirement plan and its impact on saving successfully for retirement. The kit is also available in Spanish.
"Today's investment decisions help determine tomorrow's overall financial health," said Houston. "We encourage employees to take advantage of the valuable resources and information made available to them on 401(k) Day as they look to make informed choices for their future."
For the eighth consecutive year, The Principal has teamed up with Profit Sharing/401k Council of America (PSCA) to spotlight the importance of employer-sponsored retirement plans and draw attention to the increasing need for American workers to save for retirement through 401(k) Day.

401-K Challenge Winner Named
As another reminder for those saving for retirement to not drop the ball on their long-term financial security, The Principal sponsors the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest 401-K Challenge. This friendly rivalry among minor league baseball teams takes place annually as part of the world's largest traveling baseball celebration, which toured 47 cities in the 2009 season.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps were the first minor league baseball team to reach 401 strikeouts – or Ks – at home during the 2009 Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest 401-K Challenge. The team reached the milestone on July 16, 2009, when TinCaps pitcher, Alexis Lara, struck out Clinton LumberKings batter Blake Ochoa. The Iowa Cubs won the title in 2008.
Held alongside the 401-K Challenge for the teams is a 401-K Sweepstakes for fans. The grand prize is $5,000 to help one lucky fan secure his or her financial future. This year's $5,000 sweepstakes winner was TinCaps fan and Marion, Iowa, native Matt Siders. His name was drawn at random from those who correctly guessed the TinCaps would win the 401-K Challenge.
