Three Principal Funds Win Prestigious Lipper Fund Awards

Awards showcase consistency in mutual fund performance

(Des Moines, Iowa) — Three Principal Funds have received prestigious Lipper Fund Awards based on multi-year performance. Lipper, a leading global research firm, presented the awards at an April 2 ceremony in New York City.

The award-winning funds include:

  • Principal Equity Income Fund; A (PQIAX): Best Equity Income Fund over 10 Years
  • Principal High Yield Fund; Institutional (PHYTX): Best High Current Yield Fund over Five Years *
  • Principal Capital Appreciation Fund; A (CMNWX): Best Multi-Cap Core Fund over 10 Years

"It's especially rewarding to be recognized by Lipper in today's environment," said Nora Everett, president of Principal Funds. "These awards provide further confirmation for financial professionals and their clients that Principal Funds provides world-class investment expertise with a long-term view."

The three winning funds are sub-advised by Edge Asset Management, Inc., one of four investment management boutiques affiliated with Principal Global Investors.

"There are two primary contributors to the outstanding performance of these funds," said Dan Coleman, chief investment officer and portfolio manager at Edge Asset Management. "Our firm's long-term investment philosophy is to buy good businesses when they are at a meaningful discount to their intrinsic value. And then we're patient as the securities rise to that value."

Edge Asset Management has $11.2 billion in equity and fixed-income assets[1]. Based in Seattle, the firm's heritage dates back to 1939 when it launched what is now the Principal Equity Income Fund, one of the first 50 mutual funds in the United States.

A mutual fund's share price and investment return will vary with market conditions, and the principal value of an investment when you sell your shares may be more or less than the original cost.

Fixed-income investment options are subject to interest rate risk, and their value will decline as interest rates rise. Lower-rated securities are subject to additional credit and default risks.

Small-cap and mid-cap stocks may have additional risks, including greater price volatility. There may be additional investment risks due to the Fund's concentration in West Coast companies.

The calculation periods extend over 36, 60, and 120 months.
