Making the List: The Principal is Once Again a NAFE Top 50 Company
March 2, 2010 (Des Moines, IA) - Forward-thinking policies, practices and development opportunities that encourage women's advancement are just a few reasons the Principal Financial Group® has been named to the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) Top 50 Companies and 10 Nonprofits for Executive Women list for the eighth consecutive year.
The annual list credits organizations who serve as champions for women in the workplace, with specific emphasis on the number of women holding jobs with profit-and-loss responsibility. It also measures women's representation in the highest-paid and top-tier positions at America's largest companies.
"Women's advancement in the workplace is always top of mind for us because they make up over half of our workforce," said Mary O'Keefe, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, The Principal. "Providing our predominately female workforce with the right development opportunities, tailored leadership programs and education really gives our female employees a chance to own their success - something that continues to be a core value at The Principal."
In addition to assessing corporate programs and policies dedicated to advancing women, NAFE examined the number of women in each company overall, in senior management and on its board of directors. They drew particular attention to the number of women with profit-and-loss responsibility.
"The numbers tell the story with women representing 38 percent of the board of directors and roughly one-third of the senior management team," said Dr. Betty Spence, president, NAFE. "Successful women at The Principal say that gender is not a barrier at this NAFE Top Company."
The National Association for Female Executives (NAFE), founded in 1972, serves 20,000 members nationwide with networking, tools and solutions to strengthen and grow their careers and businesses. NAFE magazine publishes the annual Top Companies issue and the annual Women of Excellence issue.
