New Tools Open the Doors of Businesses to Advisors

The Principal introduces new, simplified sales process for exit planning.

August 16, 2010 (Des Moines, IA) - As Americans continue to rebuild from the economic crisis, business owners are faced with a complex set of challenges for both their personal and business finances. With a new suite of tools and support from the Principal Financial Group®, financial advisors can help owners better prepare for the future by developing sound business exit or succession plans.

By working with experts from The Principal® advisors offer business owners free, informal business valuations and a review of buy-sell agreements to start the planning process or identify if plans need to be readjusted. This analysis is often the starting point for an in-depth discussion with the client’s tax and legal advisors.

“The recession has stimulated interest in business owners taking a more careful look at their long-term planning needs and how they will exit or pass along their business. As we work with business owners, we’re seeing a sharp disparity between what owners think their businesses are worth compared with the reality of the current market,” said Steve Parrish, national advanced solutions consultant for the Principal Financial Group. “Our team of experts runs the numbers so advisors give owners a range of values representing the potential worth of their businesses based on five financial methodologies. This opens the door to discuss future planning and funding strategies.”

A new simplified sales approach means advisors work directly with a dedicated team of experts including attorneys and CPAs who focus on business customers.  Through a new dedicated site, www.principal.com/exitplanning, advisors have easy access to a number of tools and resources as they address exit planning and business succession needs.  Some specific features include:

  • Free, powerful planning tools like informal business valuation and buy-sell review
  • Sales ideas, marketing tools, education materials and consultative services
  • Client profiles and market opportunities

“Our turnkey approach and team of experts make it easy for advisors to open doors at businesses and sit down with business owners with a free service designed to help them plan for their future,” notes Parrish.
