Advancement of Women Earns The Principal a Spot on the NAFE Top 50

This marks the 9th consecutive year on the list

March 15, 2011 (Des Moines, Iowa) – The Principal Financial Group® has been named to the 2011 National Association for Female Executives (NAFE) Top 50 Companies and 10 Nonprofits for Executive Women. The list recognizes organizations whose policies and practices encourage advancement of women. This is the ninth consecutive year The Principal® has been recognized by NAFE.

“We are proud of this prestigious recognition and proud of the prominent leadership of women in our company. Throughout The Principal organization, and in nearly half of our senior management roles, women drive results,” said Mary O’Keefe, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, The Principal. “Providing our large female workforce, and all employees, the right development and leadership opportunities are critical in supporting our culture of diversity and inclusion.”

The annual list credits organizations that serve as champions for women in the workplace, with specific emphasis on the number of women at the highest ranks and those with jobs with profit-and-loss responsibility. It also measures women’s representation in the highest-paid and top-tier positions at America’s largest companies. To be considered for the NAFE Top Companies for Executive Women, companies must have a minimum of two women on their board of directors.

“Women have long struggled to reach the highest ranks in a male-dominated business environment, but with the growing profitability of companies with women in the top ranks, that is changing,” said Dr. Betty Spence, president, NAFE. “Successful women at The Principal say that gender is not a barrier at this NAFE Top Company."
