School-to-Career Program in Partnership with DMACC

The Principal Financial Group® (The Principal®), in partnership with Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), is proud to offer a new innovative school-to-career program through its Information Technology (IT) and Retirement and Investor Services (RIS) divisions.

About the Program

The program combines core courses at DMACC with Principal-specific courses, offering students a unique opportunity to prepare for their career, directly, in the classroom.

Candidates are guaranteed full-time employment* at The Principal upon successful completion of the program, and return of satisfactory background checks and other tests required for the position.

Selection Criteria

  • Strong High school cumulative GPA (3.0 or better is preferred)
  • Leadership skills demonstrated through community (such as philanthropic organizations or church) or extracurricular activity involvement, or previous employment
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

RIS School-to-Career Program

This program is available to students starting their first or second year at DMACC and provides an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration.

RIS Requirements

  • Maintain cumulative 3.3 GPA or higher
  • Complete final 10 credits at DMACC
  • Complete Principal-preferred courses at DMACC
  • Complete a minimum of 64 credits
    • AS degree core requirements – 28 credits
    • Business Administration core requirements – 26 credits
    • Principal-specific business course selection – 9 credits
    • Elective – 1 credit
  • Complete the entire program within two years

IT School-to-Career Program

This program is available to students starting their first year at DMACC and provides an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Business Information Systems. 

IT Requirements

  • Maintain cumulative 3.3 GPA or higher
  • Complete final 10 credits at DMACC
  • Complete Principal-customized and preferred courses at DMACC
  • Complete a minimum of 68 credits
    • Business Information Systems core requirements – 38 credits
    • Principal-preferred Business Information Systems options – 24 credits
    • Principal customized courses – 6 credits
  • Complete the entire program within two years

Job Opportunities as a Result of the Program

Candidates completing the program successfully (per the requirements above) will be placed in a full-time position at The Principal at their corporate campus after graduation (assuming the return of satisfactory background checks and other applicable tests needed for the position). Positions include:

Candidates completing the first year of the program successfully may be offered part-time employment at The Principal during their second year of study. Students working part-time at The Principal are eligible for tuition reimbursement for future courses upon hire, up to $5,000 per year.

*If The Principal decides for any reason not to offer full-time employment to a candidate who completes the program successfully, The Principal will reimburse the candidate for all tuition costs associated with the customized DMACC program.
