Intern Experiences

Take a closer look at what an intern experiences at The Principal, including:

Your First Day as an Intern

We want your first day and every day thereafter to be a success. That’s why we’ve designed a program that will help you get to know The Principal first-hand. On your first day, you'll start off with a half-day orientation where you’ll receive:

  • company ID
  • overview of the company, our businesses and our goals
  • find out about mass transportation and parking
  • eat lunch with your fellow interns and get a tour of our corporate facility.

During orientation you'll find out more about the VIP Program and receive information on special events and activities, where there will be plenty of time for networking. The last half of the day is spent with your leader and department, getting acclimated to your workspace and what types of projects you’ll be working on throughout your internship.

Special events and activities

Events and activities are scheduled specifically for our VIP’s to network and advance their careers. Activities include:

  • Lunch & Learns – Lunch with senior management to learn more about our business and potential career paths.
  • Workshops – Help you grow developmentally. Topics include public speaking, resume building, interviewing skills, presentation 101, business etiquette and more.
  • Group outings – Experience part of the fun of working at The Principal. Attend an Iowa Cubs game, go golfing, or see some of Des Moines’ best sights during the work day to help you build relationships with other interns.

Living in Des Moines

Corn and fields? You’ll definitely see some, and you’ll likely become a fan of corn on the cob, if you aren’t already. We’re proud of our Iowa heritage. But, you can expect something even more in greater Des Moines.

Like sports? Great, you can play them or watch them. There’s nearly any kind of league you can think of and if you’d rather watch, you won’t want to miss basketball, hockey, soccer or baseball.

And, if you want something besides the sports scene, there’s plenty. From the Farmer’s Market, Gray’s Lake, great shopping and more restaurants, coffee houses and bars than you can possibly visit in one summer.
