The Information Technology Scholarship

Are you a high school senior in the state of Iowa with a 3.25 GPA who plans to pursue a Computer Science, MIS, CIS, Computer Programming, or related field of study at an accredited college or university? If you answered yes, this is your chance to receive a $2,500 Information Technology Scholarship from The Principal®!

The Principal IT Scholarship also offers you first consideration for full time summer internships with the company, and the opportunity to qualify for the scholarship each year, for a maximum of four years and $10,000.

Am I qualified?

Applicant must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a resident of Iowa
  • Be currently enrolled in high school as a graduating senior
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.25
  • Select a Computer Science, MIS, CIS, Computer Programming, or related field of study at an accredited college or university

Employees, agents and dependents of officers of The Principal at the level of Vice President and above are not eligible.

How could I become a scholarship recipient?

Scholarships will be awarded to applicants by a committee, designated by The Principal, based on a combination of the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • ACT/SAT score
  • Extracurricular involvement and leadership
  • Interview with members of the IT Recruiting Committee
  • Transcripts
  • Work history
  • Written essay

What do I get as a Information Technology Scholarship recipient?

  • Scholarship certificate will be presented to recipient.
  • Scholarship payment will be made directly to the university/college on recipient’s behalf.
  • Up to four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded each year to qualified candidates.

Scholarship Requirements

Candidates awarded scholarships will have the opportunity to qualify for the $2,500 scholarship each year for a maximum of four years and $10,000 if all requirements are met:

  • Complete a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester (or equivalent if school terms differ).
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 (4.0 = A) or equivalent. If the GPA is not maintained, the scholarship may be withdrawn at the sole discretion of the Principal Financial Group.
  • Maintain good student standing with the college or university.
  • Maintain good standing with the Principal Financial Group, and achieve an acceptable performance rating, if selected for a full time summer internship.

What are the application deadlines?

  • The deadline to apply is March 15 to be eligible for a scholarship for the following academic year.
  • A completed electronic application is required for eligibility and must be submitted by March 15. Apply using our online application.
  • Official transcripts are required for eligibility and must be postmarked by March 15.
  • Finalists will be chosen after all applications have been reviewed.
