The Principal Edge Scholarship for Excellence

Am I qualified?

To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a dependent, under the age of 25, of a Principal Financial Group employee who:
    • Works a minimum of 20 hours per week
    • Has a minimum of one year of employment with the Principal Financial Group as of the application deadline
    • Dependents of agents or executives (vice president and above) of The Principal are not eligible.
  • Be a U.S. high school senior or graduate who plans to enroll or already is enrolled in a full time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four year college or university, or vocational-technical school for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Be an international student in the final year of secondary school or secondary school graduate who plans to enroll or who is already enrolled in full time undergraduate university level studies for the entire upcoming academic year.
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA or the equivalent.

How could I become a scholarship recipient?

Scholarships will be awarded to applicants by the scholarship administrator, Scholarship America, designated by The Principal, based on a combination of the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Past academic performance
  • Future academic potential
  • Leadership and participation in school and community activities
  • Work experience
  • Statement of career and education aspirations and goals
  • Unusual personal or family circumstances
  • An outside appraisal
  • Financial need
  • The academic evaluation for international applicants will include a review of the grade/mark-average based on the grading system used in the applicant's country and a review of the results of academic examinations. This information is evaluated to complete the academic ranking of international applicants.

What do I get as a scholarship recipient?

  • This is a one-time scholarship; however applicants will be allowed to reapply each year.
  • Each award is $2,500.
  • Up to 20 scholarships are awarded.
  • The award checks will be issued in U.S. currency.
  • In order for the dependent to receive the award, The Principal employee must be a current employee on the date the award is issued to their dependent.

What are the application requirements and deadlines?

  • The deadline to apply is March 30 to be eligible for a scholarship for the following academic year. A completed application is required for eligibility.
  • Transcripts are required for eligibility and must be postmarked by March 30.

How do I apply?

Applications will be accepted beginning February 13.
