Julie's Story
Running is a hobby of mine. Little did I know it would become a great networking opportunity for me. Every day, I try to run during my lunch hour, or at least some point in the day. Joining a group of runners from The Principal has been a valuable way for me to make new connections within the company. It’s great to work for a company where you can get connected through common interests. I’ve been able to meet so many employees that enjoy running as much as I do.
My first exposure to The Principal was during an internship in Retirement and Investment Services working on data modeling and database administration projects. After graduating from college, I became an IT Application Analyst, supporting the building block architecture code for our transaction processing systems. I’ve designed, developed and supported databases within two separate business areas and now I’m leading a database support team that assists project teams with database design, development and support.
After several years of trying new roles across business segments and participating in several company activities, I’ve realized some of my greatest gains have come from the “extras” -- my running partners, my participation in IT recruiting efforts and helping with the annual United Way campaigns. The multitude of job opportunities, combined with the “extracurricular” activities, is what keeps things interesting. But, the culture is what really makes this place tick.
