Title: Internal Wholesaler
Business Area: Retirement and Investor Services
Degree: Marketing
Years at The Principal: 4 Years
Career Path: Sales
College: Iowa State University

Candace's Story

While in college, I worked in the Retirement and Investment Services area as an intern and was fortunate to be a Principal Scholar. Once I graduated, I knew The Principal was where I wanted to be. I accepted a position within the Life and Health insurance area’s Leadership Development Program where I rotated through four departments.

After that, I took a position within Retirement and Investment Services as a marketing coordinator – creating marketing materials for our mid-sized clients. Although I enjoyed my job, I wanted to try living in a different part of the country, and an opportunity became available that would allow me to do that. I was able to relocate to California, find a great position and still further my career with The Principal.

As an internal wholesaler, I partner with our field wholesalers to create and manage our sales pipeline. In addition, I develop relationships with financial professionals in my assigned territory and create proposals/pricing for prospective clients.

Although I’ve had many successes so far in my career, I’m most proud of all of the volunteer activities I’ve participated in. It’s great to be part of an organization that cares for and gives back to the community, and encourages employees to do the same.

Current title: Collateral Review Analyst II
Business segment: Global Asset Management
Years with The Principal: 3
Career Path: Investments
College: Iowa State University

Tami's Story

I began my career at The Principal as an intern and after working here for two summers I knew I did not want to look anywhere else. With a company the size of The Principal, I was confident I could find a position to match my skills. And, I did.

My first full-time position was as an investment accountant in our global asset management business. There, I was able to hone my accounting skills and prepare for my next move to a collateral review analyst. In this position, I review and analyze quarterly financial results as part a collateral review on all loan requests and manage regular inspections of our real estate properties.

Outside of my daily job responsibilities, I act as a business unit recruiter — attending college job fairs — to attract talent to our global asset management division. The never-ending chain of possibilities is what I love about The Principal. I can increase my business knowledge, participate in various company-sponsored activities and take advantage of a number of career paths, without ever leaving the company.

Besides that, I'm improving my leadership skills by mentoring an intern. Not only does that allow me to share my experiences as an intern, it is giving me a chance to learn, develop and prepare for my next career move.
