Helping people is an important part of our culture at The Principal®. That's why the company, its employees and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., work together to give back in a variety of ways.

Our charitable giving is based on a simple philosophy: by targeting our contributions toward entities that have the greatest impact on our employees and marketers, customers, shareholders and businesses, we are able to make the greatest difference.

This section highlights stories from our five main areas of giving:

  • Grants
    Through our formal grants process, we give generously to deserving organizations that support the following areas:
    • Education
    • Arts and culture
    • Health and human services
    • Civic, community and the environment

  • Disaster Relief
    We donate to relief efforts when disasters strike communities where we have a heavy employee/customer presence.

  • In-Kind Donations
    Gifts have included everything from office furniture and supplies to computers, carpeting and even temporary warehouse/office space.

  • Matching Gifts
    Through our matching gift program, qualified employee/agent gifts made to eligible K-12 education programs, higher education programs and United Way are matched by the company, increasing the impact made by each individual donor.

  • United Way
    The Principal has conducted an annual charitable campaign since the 1920s, when we helped found the Community Chest, which later became United Way. Nearly 90 years later, our commitment to that organization is as strong as ever. We’re proud to be just the 19th company to receive United Way of America’s Spirit of America award, recognizing corporate community involvement.
