Our Philosophy
We want your wellness program to succeed. So, we develop a wellness program based on your needs that is an integrated approach to help you:
- Save money
- Reduce claim activity
- Improve employee health
- Save lives
Our approach involves creating programs that provide a health management continuum, and incorporates the stages of change lifestyle behavioral model.
Creating core programs
We have created a comprehensive four-step process that addresses overall health and helps participants manage the conditions with the highest risk of claims. This process is what makes our wellness program. (Get details on the Wellness products and services page.)
Providing a health management continuum
From healthy employees to at-risk employees, Principal Wellness’ health continuum and the Principal Wellness programs work together to allow all employees the ability to manage their health. The continuum effectively identifies high-risk employees and proactively refers participants to the appropriate level of health management.
Incorporating the stages of change
In addition to our four-step core process, we integrate awareness of the Prochaska Stages of Change Model* into our wellness programs. The model helps to determine if participants are ready to change their behavior.
Using this model increases the effectiveness of the program by identifying the stage of each person regarding major areas of health (including nutrition, exercise, stress, weight, and smoking). We then provide consultation and information that makes the most sense to the individual. Principal Wellness technicians, counselors and coaches are trained and certified in identification and counseling using the Prochaska Stages of Change Model.
| Stage of Change | Mindset/Intention |
| Pre-contemplation | Not thinking of change |
| Contemplation | Seriously thinking of change within the next six months |
| Preparation | Getting ready to make a change within the next month |
| Action | Actively making a change |
| Maintenance | Made the change and maintaining the change for more than six months |
