Coverage Type

If you elect to cover only yourself under your medical plan, you have elected "self" or "individual" coverage.

If you elect to cover yourself and one or more dependents under your medical plan, you have elected "family" coverage.

If you elected family coverage, the family deductible limit may be a common family deductible or an individual with family maximum deductible.

Common Family Deductible: the entire family deductible must be met before benefits are payable for any family member.
Individual with Family Maximum: once a member satisfies the individual deductible, benefits are payable for that individual; expenses of all family members are used to satisfy the remaining family deductible.

Note: Family Coverage and HSAs for Spouses

A spouse must meet the same eligibility criteria as anyone else (i.e. cannot be covered under any other medical plan that is not a qualified high deductible health plan and cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return) to establish an HSA. Combined, the two accounts cannot exceed the maximum contribution amount allowed for the family.

A spouse can make catch-up contributions based on his or her age, if he or she has his or her own (separate) Health Savings Account.
