2003-2005 Historic Gardens Project Grant Program: Central Atlantic Region

Central Atlantic Region
Central Atlantic Region Flowering Trees Planting Planting a flowering tree at a historic site within each state.
Delaware
Hoe 'n Hope GC Greenbank Mill Garden Restoration, 19th cen. Plant gardens that will enhance living history educational programs recreating life and times of Colonial America with appropriate early 19th century plants correctly labeled. Included will be a dyer's garden, kitchen garden and landscaping of the miller's house.
Maryland
Calvert GC Linden Gardens Restoration, 1869 Using historic photographs native Linden trees and a kitchen garden will be restored to this historic urban farmstead with ten surviving 19th century buildings. In addition appropriate signage will guide and interpret the garden for visitors.
Halten GC Sherwood Herb Garden, 1930 Rejuvenation of the Sherwood House County Park garden will be the goal of this project.
Landscape Design Council Fort Frederick State Park Garden, 1756 Project to renovate the garden surrounding the entrance sign with regionally native shrubs and groundcovers more appropriate to the site and that labeled, will also be a demonstration garden of native plant material.
Mt. Washington GC Carroll Mansion Courtyard Garden, 1832 Rebuilding of upper terrace and ramps and install gardens to give a hint of what was there at the time of Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Project will strive to be correct to the historic period although no records exist of the garden.
National Capital Area
District III HFH Stone Cottage Restoration, 1940 Landscape the stone cottage to prepare it for use by Habitat for Humanity. Design will reflect the spirit of the era with new varieties of old favorites.
Dominion Valley GC George Washington's River Farm Tree, 1790 After storm damage, tree restoration will ensure that the gardens maintain their original character.
Rock Spring GC Ball-Sellers House Restoration, 1750 Refurbish and restore landscaping and gardens to educate visitors of the extent to which 18th century residents relied on natural resources for food, clothing and medical remedies.
New Jersey
The GC of New Jersey, Inc. Rutgers Log Cabin Gardens, 1936 Restoration of the historic Log Cabin grounds will include native and regional plants. Cultivars through 1936 will be permitted as a display of the scientific plant development of the University. Included in the grant will be printed handouts at garden functions and an educational exhibit.
Central Sussex GC Coursen House Historic Garden, 1805 Historic records and photographs will enable the club to restore this farm site in the center of town. An orchard and perennial gardens will be planted in appropriate landscaping with educational value.
Rake and Hoe GC Miller-Cory Museum Gardens, 1740 Club will create a native shrub garden at the entrance and a Children's Sensory Garden to add to the present educational opportunities at this living history museum.
Terra Nova GC Edison Memorial Tower Landscape, 1900 Provide suitable landscaping for this light tower using flowering trees and perennials with annuals for four-season beauty.
New York
Canton GC Silas Wright Museum In coordination with local historic association for correct time period planting, additional shrubs and flowers will be provided for this house museum.
First District Historic Richmond Town Project, 1690 A re-created village of historic buildings, the club will design and plant the entrance to the village. Each species will be labeled with name and place of origin.
Hillside Acres GC Hurley Heritage Museum Restoration, 1700 Redo existing gardens and grounds to 1700-1750 era with plantings including an herb garden, perennials, shrubs and a rose garden using heirloom plants as available.
Luther Burbank GC Sherwood House Restoration, 1740 Project will restore the herb garden to 1740 era.
Youngstown GC Trees of Our Heritage, 1850 Plant a small grove of trees associated with 5 historic figures/events from 150 years ago. Bur Oak, apple, hackberry, green ash and cherry tree. Planting to be done at the Red Brick Schoolhouse (1892) site.
Ohio
Bay Village GC Seascape at Cahoon Memorial Park, 1810 Place a city-logo sculpture and surrounding xeriscape garden at this city museum.
Cincinnati District GC Garden of the Americas In honor of Theodore Berry, Cincinnati's first African-American mayor, a garden at the International Friendship Park will highlight cultural diversity.
Powell Area GC Martin-Perry House Gardens, 1889 Project will restore all of the gardens using heirloom plants and historic features for focal points.
Pennsylvania
GC Fed of Pennsylvania, Inc Children's Memorial Peace Garden, 1905 A statewide project to create an educational and healing garden for quiet, reflective moments at an unoccupied chapel. This site is near the area flight 93 went down.
Blair GC Baker Mansion Historic Gardens, 1849 Project will recreate a section of the gardens to provide a historically accurate landscape in the style of the original gardens using period flowers and herbs. Original family photos, letters and seed catalogues are being used.
Town & Country GC / Rices Landing Thomas Hughes House, 1814 An herb garden will be placed near the kitchen door and perennial border in the front yard plus two trees. The perennial flowers as used in old-fashioned gardens will give visitors an opportunity to identify them.
