Betsy J. Bernard, Past President – AT&T

Betsy J. Bernard has been a Director of the Company since 2001 and of Principal Life since 1999. Ms. Bernard was President of AT&T from October 2002 until December 2003. Prior to October 2002, she was Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Consumer since April 2001.

Ms. Bernard is also a director of two other public companies: Telular Corporation (Chair), a company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets products based on proprietary interface technology for use in wireless communication networks, and Zimmer Holdings, Inc., which designs and manufacturers orthopedic reconstructive and other related surgical products.

Jocelyn Carter-Miller, President – TechEd Ventures

Jocelyn Carter-Miller has been a Director of the Company since 2001 and of Principal Life since 1999. Ms. Carter-Miller has been President of TechEd Ventures, a community empowerment firm that educates and inspires children, families and communities through the development and management of charter schools and community-based programs, since 2005. Ms. Carter-Miller was Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Office Depot, Inc. from February 2002 until March 2004. Prior to that time, Ms. Carter-Miller was Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Motorola, Inc. from February 1999 until February 2002.

Ms. Carter-Miller is a director of two other public companies: Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc., a global marketing and communications company, and NetGear, Inc., a provider of networking products.

Gary E. Costley, Ph.D., Retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer – International Multifoods Corporation

Gary E. Costley has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life since 2002. He was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of International Multifoods Corporation, a manufacturer and marketer of branded consumer food and food service products, from November 1997 until June 2004 and following his retirement from International Multifoods was a co-founder and managing director of C & G Capital Management, LLC until May 2009.

He is a director of three other public companies: Tiffany & Co., a holding company for Tiffany and Company, a jeweler and specialty retailer; Prestige Brand Holdings, Inc., a company that develops and markets over-the-counter drugs, household cleaning products and personal care items; and Covance, Inc., a drug development services company.

Michael T. Dan, Retired Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer – The Brink's Company

Michael T. Dan has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life since 2006. He served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Brink's Company, a global provider of secure transportation and cash management services, from 1999 - 2011.

Dennis H. Ferro, Retired President and Chief Executive Officer – Evergreen Investment Management Company

Dennis H. Ferro has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life since November 1, 2010. Mr. Ferro served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Evergreen Investment Management Company, an asset management firm, from 2003 - 2008, and was the Chief Investment Officer of Evergreen from 1999 to 2003. From 1994-1999, he was Executive Vice President of Zurich Investment Management Ltd. and from 1991-1994 was Senior Managing Director of CIGNA International Investments.

C. Daniel Gelatt, Ph.D., President – NMT Corporation

C. Daniel Gelatt has been a Director of the Company since 2001 and of Principal Life since 1988. Dr. Gelatt has been President of NMT Corporation, an industry leader in mobile mapping and workforce automation software and has been providing graphic imaging services to clients worldwide for more than 40 years, since 1987.

He is also a director and President of these other Gelatt privately-owned companies: Elmwood Corporation, The Gelatt Corporation, Ginkgo, LLC and Gelatt Information Machines Corp. He is also a director of Advanced Marketing Concepts, Ltd., nPoint, Inc. and Board chairman of Trust Point, Inc.

Sandra L. Helton, Past Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer – Telephone and Data Systems, Inc.

Sandra L. Helton has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life since 2001. Ms. Helton was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Telephone & Data Systems, Inc., a diversified telecommunications corporation, from 1998 through 2006.

She is a director of two other public companies, Covance, Inc., a drug development services company, and LexMark International, Inc., a provider of printing and imaging products, software, solutions and services that help customers save time and money.

Richard L. Keyser, Retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer – W.W. Grainger, Inc.

Richard L. Keyser has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life since 2002. Mr. Keyser served as Chairman Emeritus of W.W. Grainger, Inc., an international distributor of products used by businesses to maintain, repair and operate their facilities, April 2009 - April 2010. He had been Chairman of the Board of Grainger since September 1997 and served as Grainger's Chief Executive Officer from March 1995 - May 2008.

Mr. Keyser is a director of one other public company: Zebra Technologies Corporation, which provides barcode and specialty label printing solutions.

Luca Maestri, Vice President and Corporate Controller – Apple Inc.

Luca Maestri has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life and a member of the Audit Committee and the Finance Committee since February 1, 2012. Mr. Maestri is vice president and corporate controller of Apple Inc. Maestri joined Apple in March 2013. In February 2011 he joined Xerox Corporation as executive vice president and chief financial officer after serving as chief financial officer of Nokia Siemens Networks since 2008. Prior to this role, he held senior executive finance positions with General Motors Corporation. A 20-year employee of GM, Maestri served as CFO of GM Europe and GM Brazil, and was executive-in-charge of the Fiat Alliance for GM Europe in Switzerland. Earlier in his career, Maestri was CFO of GM Thailand, director of operations analysis for GM Asia Pacific, and CFO of GM Ireland.

Elizabeth E. Tallett, Principal – Hunter Partners, LLC

Elizabeth E. Tallett has been a Director of the Company since 2001 and of Principal Life since 1992. Ms. Tallett has been a Principal of Hunter Partners, LLC, a management company for early to mid-stage pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies, since July 2002.

She is a director of three other public companies: Coventry Health Care, Inc., a managed health care company; Meredith Corporation, a media and marketing company; and Qiagen, N.V., the leading global provider of sample and assay technologies.

Larry D. Zimpleman, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer – Principal Financial Group

Larry D. Zimpleman has been a Director of the Company and Principal Life since 2006. He has been Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company and Principal Life since May 2009. He was Chief Executive Officer and President of the Company and Principal Life from May 2008 to May 2009 and was President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company and Principal Life from June 2006 to May 2008. He was President, Retirement and Investor Services of the Company and of Principal Life from December 2003 to June 2006.

Mr. Zimpleman is a member of the board of directors of the American Council of Life Insurers, the board of directors of the Financial Services Roundtable and the board of trustees of Drake University. Mr. Zimpleman chairs the Greater Des Moines Partnership and is Vice Chair of the Iowa Business Council.
