Life Insurance

Life has its twists and turns, and the only thing you can really expect is the unexpected. That’s why being prepared for the future is important. While it’s not easy to think about what would happen to your family if you were gone, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here’s how life insurance works

Life insurance helps you put the people in your life first. If something were to happen to you, your life insurance proceeds would go to the people you’ve designated as your beneficiaries. Those funds can help them manage financial obligations, such as:

  • Immediate expenses – funeral and medical bills
  • Ongoing expenses – mortgage/rent and daily living expenses
  • Future expenses – paying off debts or college funding

You have the opportunity to purchase life insurance for you, your spouse or domestic partner and children at affordable group rates with no health questions asked during your enrollment period.

Employees can purchase coverage up to 3 1/2 times their annual budgeted salary. And when you purchase coverage for yourself, you may also cover an eligible spouse or domestic partner for $10,000, $20,000 or $40,000. Dependent children can be covered for $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000.

Insured Minimum Maximum with no
health questions
You 1/2 annual budgeted salary 3 1/2 times annual budgeted salary
Spouse or Domestic Partner $10,000 $40,000
You Children $5,000 $20,000

Eligibility

Each year during your annual benefit election, you have the opportunity to:

  • Increase the amount of coverage for yourself or family members
  • Add coverage for family members not currently covered
    • Eligible dependents include your spouse, if not hospital or home confined and provided they do not elect benefits as an employee, and children.
  • Purchase life insurance with no health questions asked

Newly hired employees and employees with a family status event change can access these benefits outside of the annual benefit election period.

Actively at work

If you are not actively at work on the day insurance would be effective, the insurance will not be in force until the date you return to work.

  • Employees absent because of a regularly scheduled day off, holiday or vacation day are not impacted
  • Employees absent due to an accident or illness are ineligible for coverage until they return to work

Long-Term Disability Insurance

Protecting your income may not be a top priority, but maybe it should be. How long could you pay the bills if your income suddenly stopped?

Think of disability insurance as your personal safety net. If you’re too sick or hurt to work, you can rely on it to replace a portion of your income. That means you can focus on taking care of yourself, instead of worrying about how you’ll pay the bills. And since your benefit checks are sent to you, you decide how to spend your benefit—whether that’s on a big-ticket item, everyday expenses or anything in between.

Did you know accidents aren’t usually the cause of a disability? Instead, illnesses—like heart disease or cancer—cause most long-term absences.

The University of Iowa provides employees with long-term disability insurance, which gives a base level of income protection. This benefit equals 60% of your monthly budgeted salary, up to a maximum of $25,000 per month.

Individual Disability Insurance

Group disability insurance is a good base of coverage, but is it enough? Depending on your income level, you may need to protect even more of your income by supplementing your existing group disability coverage with individual Disability Income (DI) insurance from Principal®.

Working together, these coverages help protect more of your most valuable asset—your ability to work and earn an income.

Individual DI insurance is not a university-funded benefit. When you purchase coverage, you own the policy, so you can take it with you if you leave or change employment. Premiums are billed directly to you and are not eligible for payroll deduction. University of Iowa cafeteria dollars may not be used toward the cost of the premiums.

As an employee of the University of Iowa, you may qualify for a 20% premium discount on your Individual DI Insurance.
