Meet the Upstate New York Business Center Team
Craig A. Dahl - Regional Managing Director
Former hockey coach turned successful financial services professional, Craig Dahl was named to lead the Principal Financial Group® Upstate New York Business Center in 2008.
Dahl joined the St. Cloud, Minnesota, office of The Principal® in 2005 after a 25-year career as a college hockey coach. He qualified for company and industry sales-based recognition clubs and has qualified several times for the Million Dollar Round Table as a Financial Representative with the Minnesota Business Center of the Principal Financial Group.
Dahl's coaching career included 19 years at St. Cloud State, where he led the Huskies to the National Collegiate Athletic Association hockey tournament five times.
John. R. Bastian, CLF, LUTCF - Associate Managing Director
John began his career as an advisor with Mutual of Omaha in 1990 and since that time has successfully held various roles within the industry. He joined the Principal Financial Group® in 2002 where he was named the Regional Director of Development prior to accepting his role as Associate Managing Director in the Upstate NY Business Center in July of 2008.
Over the years, John has felt strongly about giving back to the community and upon relocating to Webster NY he has become actively involved with a number of charitable events and organizations including the Knights of Columbus and the Rochester Rotary Club.
In his free time, John enjoys playing golf, kayaking with his wife Sharon and spending quality time with the family.
Matthew E. Vahue, CLF - Recruiting Director
Matthew joined the Principal Financial Group® in January 2010 as the Recruiting Director for the Upstate New York Business Center. He supports and helps coordinate the growth of the Business Center through attracting, recruiting and selecting new financial representatives to The Principal®.
In 2010, Matthew qualified for the company's Management Achievement Round Table (MART). MART is an exclusive gathering of top field management to exchange ideas and acknowledge accomplishments. Managers qualify for this distinction by achieving excellence in a number of key factors including recruiting, retention, persistency and growth.
Matthew and his wife, Courtney, are actively involved in a number of charities in the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region. He is also a member of the Canandaigua Rotary Club. In his free time, Matthew enjoys golfing, skiing and spending time on Canandaigua Lake.
Susan J. Harris, FLMI - Operations Manager
Susan has been in the financial services industry since 1978, and joined the Principal Financial Group® in 2000. She oversees business center operations, supports the management team in areas of budgeting and expenses, compliance, recruiting and development, and supervises our multi-location staff. She also helps to ensure the business center is providing high quality service to producers, prospects, and clients.
Susan is native of Rochester where she lives with her husband, David.
