How we review applications, conduct interviews, and do background checks

We’re different than many other companies who use impersonal software to automatically screen out applications. We bring a caring spirit to the recruiting process knowing your decision to take the next step in your career is a foundation for your future.

  • If selected, your first interview will be done by a phone call with a recruiter or though a video interview.

  • Once first interviews are completed, the recruiter will suggest candidates to be interviewed by the Hiring Manager.

  • Normally, the next interview takes place in person, unless for some reason the candidate is unable be there in person.

  • During all of the above steps, the status shown on the Applications page is “Interview".

  • Once all interviews are complete, you will be notified of the decision either by email or phone.

Be prepared! Find a quiet place without interruptions or lots of background noise. If you’re on a cell phone, be sure you get reception and you‘ve got enough battery life.

You’ll be asked about your experience, professional background and career interests. So, have your elevator speech and be ready to share more details when asked. Also think about specific situations you could share highlighting some of your key skills—you’ll be asked at least a few questions about this!

Research as much as you can—and be prepared to ask a few questions of your own. Stuck on what you should ask? Here’s some things you might want to know:

  • Typical day
  • Team size and culture
  • Career path and development opportunities
  • The Principal Financial Group requires that all applicants successfully complete a background check prior to employment.

  • If an issue arises with the background check, you will be overnighted a copy of the results, along with an address to mail your response within a specified time.

  • If the issue cannot be resolved, you will be notified in writing.
     

Once you’ve complete your application, you’ll receive an email confirming your application and outlining next steps.

A recruiter hand reviews your application along with others who’ve applied on an ongoing basis. Because of the care we take in our selection decisions, timing will vary from a few days to a few weeks. Many factors can impact the timing of when you’ll hear back from us. Some of those include: number of applications, start date for the position and complexities of the experiences needed.

If you’re selected for an interview, you’ll receive a call to set up a time where we can learn more about your background and interests. If the decision is made to move forward with others (which could be for a variety of reasons), you’d then receive an email from us—either way, you will hear back from us!

The background checks we perform depend largely on the type of position you are applying for. A criminal background check is done for every potential employee. Based on the position you are being considered for we may also include any of the following:

  • Credit Check
  • Education Check
  • Work History
  • Motor Vehicle Report
  • License
  • Once you’ve received an offer and have accepted, you’ll receive an email to initiate your background check. This can take up to 3-5 days, so be sure to complete it right away!

  • If you accept the offer of employment, the online status of your application will change to “Offer Accepted".

  • Once all the necessary paperwork is completed and you’ve provided any required documentation, the status will change to “Hired".

From the Career Tools page, click “View applications". The “Status" column indicates where your application is in the recruiting process:

  • Applied” means your application was received.
  • "Reviewed​" means your application is being reviewed by our talent team.
  • Interview” means you’ve been scheduled for an interview with a recruiter or the hiring manager.
  • Decline” means we've decided to move forward with other candidates (which could be for a variety of reasons). You'll receive an email reflecting this decision as well. If you don't receive an email, check your spam or junk folders.
  • Withdrawn” means you withdrew your application.
  • Offer Accepted” means you’ve accepted an offer of employment. Congratulations!
  • Hired” means you’ve been officially hired. Welcome to the team!
