Helping people is an important part of our culture at Principal®. That's why the company, its employees and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., work together to give back in a variety of ways.
Our charitable giving is based on a simple philosophy: by targeting our contributions toward entities that have the greatest impact on our employees and marketers, customers, shareholders and businesses, we are able to make the greatest difference.
100 years of LIVING UNITED at Principal
At Principal, our mission is to help people live their best lives. That goes beyond seeing to their retirement, insurance, and investment needs. It’s about seeing to their financial security, overall well-being and their daily life challenges; along with the strength of our communities.
To make a difference, we partner with one of the oldest, and most admired charitable organizations in the U.S., the United Way. In fact, we helped lead the United Way of Central Iowa’s very first campaign back in 1917. That first year we raised an astonishing sum of $100,000. In 2017, we’re still giving back through the United Way, 100 years later.
During our three-week campaign every year our nearly 10,000 U.S. employees have the chance to pull together as one big team and rally around our communities. We make pledging quick and easy for employees. They take comfort in knowing that 100 percent of their donations — as well as our dollar-for-dollar match — stays in their local community.
Our commitment to United Way has stood the test of time. And as long as the needs in our communities continue, so will our participation, volunteerism, and our financial support.
2016 campaign results
With our unlimited dollar-for-dollar match, Principal pledged a total of $8.3 million to United Ways across the country.
Employee contributions went to more than 230 local United Way chapters and agencies across the U.S.
We had 113 new leadership givers bringing our total of leadership givers to just shy of 1,000 employees who pledge $1,000 or more.
We welcomed about 100 more employees as United Way Ambassadors. These are employees who promise to not only give, but to advocate and to volunteer.
And thousands of employees volunteered in service to their communities.
The Principal Charity Classic
The 2016 Principal Charity Classic®, Iowa’s only annual PGA TOUR Champions golf tournament, raised a record $2,053,725 for Iowa children’s charities, including six regional Tournament Charity Partners, and more than 100 statewide charity organizations through the tournament’s Birdies for Charity Program.
That brings the 10-year total of tournament contributions to nearly $10 million. To find out more about this event read our article.
Other ways we give back
Helping people is an important part of our culture at Principal. That's why the company, its employees and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., work together to give back in a variety of ways.
The Principal® and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., have embraced corporate responsibility by awarding more than $100 million to nonprofit organizations that are making a difference in the communities where our employees work and live.
We help deserving organizations spend less on items like office supplies, equipment and computers by giving in-kind donations. These small gifts can make big impacts.
One of the ways the Principal Financial Group® gives back to the communities in which we operate is by providing support in times of trouble. We provide financial assistance during natural disasters and other emergencies.
