Helping people is an important part of our culture at Principal®. That's why the company, its employees, and the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., work together to give back in a variety of ways.
Our charitable giving is based on a simple philosophy: by targeting our contributions toward entities that have the greatest impact on our employees and marketers, customers, shareholders and businesses, we are able to make the greatest difference.
100+ years of LIVING UNITED at Principal
At Principal, our mission is to help people live their best lives. That goes beyond seeing to their retirement, insurance, and investment needs. It’s about seeing to their financial security, overall well-being and their daily life challenges; along with the strength of our communities.
To make a difference, we partner with one of the oldest, and most admired charitable organizations in the U.S., the United Way. In fact, we helped lead the United Way of Central Iowa’s very first campaign back in 1917. That first year we raised an astonishing sum of $100,000. In 2019, we’re still giving back through the United Way, 100+ years later.
During our three-week campaign every year our nearly 10,000 U.S. employees have the chance to pull together as one big team and rally around our communities. We make pledging quick and easy for employees. They take comfort in knowing that 100 percent of their donations—as well as our dollar-for-dollar match—stays in their local community.
Our commitment to United Way has stood the test of time. And as long as the needs in our communities continue, so will our participation, volunteerism, and our financial support.
2019 campaign results
- Principal employees pledged a record $6 million to United Ways across the country.
- Employee contributions went to more than 230 local United Way chapters and agencies across the U.S.
- And thousands of employees volunteered in service to their communities.
The Principal Charity Classic
The 2016 Principal Charity Classic®, Iowa’s only annual PGA TOUR Champions golf tournament, raised a record $2,053,725 for Iowa children’s charities, including six regional Tournament Charity Partners, and more than 100 statewide charity organizations through the tournament’s Birdies for Charity Program.
That brings the 10-year total of tournament contributions to nearly $10 million.
Straight to initiative
Principal Foundation invests in building strong communities around the world through financial empowerment, helping all learn, earn, and save more. In 2018 the Foundation committed to fostering social change by investing in projects that help youth ages 15 – 30 earn and save more, with a goal of impacting 50,000 youth by 2023.
Today’s youth face significant barriers to economic mobility and financial security. Fortunately, a number of organizations are using technology to develop tools that empower young people to earn more and save more. That’s why last year, the Principal Foundation joined forces with Financial Health Network to announce the Youth Can Innovation Program—an ongoing initiative to bolster the work of some of the nation’s most promising fintech innovators.
The Youth Can Innovation Program selected 2 innovators, Edquity and MyPath. Principal and Financial Health Network provided the innovators $150,000, advisory and industry assistance, and pro bono collaboration to strengthen the work of these innovators.

One of the ways the we give back to the communities in which we operate is by providing support in times of trouble. We provide financial assistance during natural disasters and other emergencies.
