Principal® has a long history and culture of giving back. Our corporate volunteer program, formed in 1972, is one of the oldest in Iowa. It facilitates thousands of hours of employee volunteerism and funding each year. To encourage participation, Principal offers a benefit called Volunteer Time Off (VTO). Through VTO, employees can use eight hours of paid work to volunteer with non-profit organizations. The benefit gives employees the chance to use their skills to help others in need.
We are committed to promoting volunteerism globally. In 2021 we worked with Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) to facilitate a global Map-A-Thon, a virtual volunteer event where we mapped over 56,00 buildings in rural Guatemala. This allows organizations like Doctors Without Borders, Red Cross, and local governments to get aid in disaster affected areas quicker and track the spread of disease, like COVID-19.
