It offers focused activities and opportunities to help you grow your skills, build lasting relationships, and explore both your personal and career aspirations. We offer a flexible approach to our start and end dates that meet the needs of students’ academic commitments.

Opportunities that align with academic calendars

Our internship opportunities mirror our full-time career opportunities. Most are hosted during the summer months between the spring and fall academic semesters (generally 10 to 12 weeks). However, some opportunities span the summer period and an academic semester in an extended co-op format (generally six to seven months).

All internship requisitions will indicate the timeframe required of interns and the work format expectations (onsite in a hybrid format or remote).

Gain experience with a variety of tech tools while doing meaningful and challenging work. Join small-group meetings with financial controllers and chief accounting officers from each business area. Attend social and professional networking events. Focus on developing skills that align with evolving business needs in a program with a history of offering full-time jobs. Apply your passion and technical skills so more people and businesses have greater access to financial security. And present results to actuarial leadership. Learn from and work with credentialed actuaries. Take on meaningful and challenging work at a company that values authenticity and encourages curiosity. Participate in small group meetings with senior actuarial leadership. Participate in our actuarial code jam—a multi-day, team-based project where you’ll work with other interns to develop solutions to actuarial business problems outside of your assigned area. Actively collaborate with stakeholders, leadership, and IT to research, analyze, and deliver data solutions. Mine data sources and make that data easy to interpret through visuals and other consumable formats. Support our analyst research and portfolio management teams. Gain exposure to both the day-to-day management of our funds as well as research. This includes working closely with experienced analysts to generate ideas and aid in construction of outperforming strategies. Help manage cash, trade execution, operations, and client facing responsibilities in support of our funds. This includes working closely with senior portfolio management associates, operations, trading, and compliance. This time-sensitive work helps develop an understanding of the day-to-day workflow of a large equity mandate. Yes, all Principal internships are paid positions. Principal also provides a lump-sum stipend benefit for all interns to assist with incidental expenses they may incur as part of their internship experience. We evaluate the early career market annually to ensure our pay and benefits components are competitive

Each year, we try to post and advertise our internship opportunities by mid to late August, in line with many universities’ fall academic semester start dates. While these postings remain live until we effectively fill our headcount needs for each position, we do advocate for individuals to apply sooner rather than later to avoid missing out. All internship opportunities are available on our general careers site.

Yes, prospective applicants should feel empowered to apply to all requisitions they feel align with their career track desires, skill sets, and qualifications. We offer many internship opportunities across our enterprise that have similar emphases, so many may appeal to a single student.

Yes, our internship opportunities currently mirror the same flexibility as their full-time counterparts. This provides opportunities to work remote or hybrid. All internship opportunity requisitions will specify at time of application.
