For Principal®, they’re a way to show what we stand for—our values, culture, and purpose.
Through our sponsorships, Principal connects business leaders together and expands access to financial tools, information, and solutions. We also use these relationships to support communities and help people who need it most. Here’s how we put our sponsorships to work.
When those in need get what they need
Principal has always invested in the communities where our employees and customers live and work. Today, our community sponsorship efforts focus on improving access to what people need to succeed—for example, partnering with local organizations that provide professional skills building to young people.
Where businesses learn from other businesses
Some of the best ideas come from learning what others do, finding inspiration in overcoming challenges, and sharing successes. By sponsoring business-to-business events, Principal enables those connections, bringing business leaders together to forge relationships and learn how to build their own resilience.
When hard work leads to excellence
How do you celebrate expertise, excellence, and equality —especially in sports? For Principal, it starts by making sure everyone has someone in their corner. Our sports sponsorships support perseverance, teamwork, and excellence on and off the court (and the greens!), for men and women athletes.

Laugh, think, and cry: Those were words of remembrance from celebrated college basketball coach Jimmy Valvano. Before he died of cancer, he formed the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The Jimmy V Classic, both honors him and supports the foundation. Principal sponsored both ESPN V Week and the classic, and our employees walked, ran, or biked over 1 million miles to raise money to support the foundation through the Principal® Foundation.
Who has the most fun (and learns the most, too) at the Inc. 5000 Conference? As the conference’s longest-running sponsor, we think the answer is “everyone,” from business leaders who learn from other leading entrepreneurs to attendees and their spirited celebrations of success.
Respect. Fairness. Empathy. Industriousness. Those were just a few of legendary college men’s basketball coach John R. Wooden’s core values. Today, as the presenting sponsor of the John R. Wooden Award for women and men and the Legends of Coaching Award, Principal celebrates Coach Wooden’s legacy, on and off the court, by recognizing the outstanding women, men, and coaches elevating college basketball.
While the Milken Institute Global Conference is its most well-known event, the Milken Institute brings year-round focus to a host of challenges, including finance. As an event sponsor, we help leaders, policymakers, and experts gather to discuss and innovate so that future generations can find paths to make meaningful progress in their lives.
For nearly 20 years, a legendary volunteer community comes together to support an unmatched community effort—the Principal Charity Classic golf tournament. The biggest benefactors of our PGA Tour Champions partnership are Iowa children’s charities: To date, the golf tournament has raised over $73 million.
Before becoming the Iowa Cubs, the minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, Des Moines’ own baseball team was the Iowa Oaks. But their playing location, at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, hasn’t changed in nearly 80 years. As naming rights sponsor of Principal Park, Principal helps to welcome over 400,000 fans each year to the field for games, concerns, and more.
